chord symbols like C7, Dm7, Gmaj9.

just took off playing all sorts of songs by ear and having a
wonderful time. I could hardly get her off that piano during her

All the best musicians play by chords these days. It's the only
way to play by ear, improvise and learn thousands of songs
that don't have scored music.
You really don't have to know a lot of chords to be able to
play thousands, of songs. In fact, if you just learn the 3
primary chords in each key, a multitude of songs will be at
your fingertips.
